Throat Singing

Music

So I’m teaching myself how to throat sing. I’m not so very stoked about the traditional applications of most throat singing as, for me at least, that music is almost unlistenable. But I have been studying it, trying to dissect the techniques. I figure it’s worth learning both for even more varied range, and to learn how to better control my throat. In practicing, I’ve also found it works the hell out my diaphragm and lungs!

Here’s a good reference site on the subject. And here’s a great introduction on the main techniques. Videos: video 1, video 2, a page of videos

Below are some samples of mine. They’re not any kind of good quality, and neither is my “throat voice” yet. You can hear wavering, popping and inconsistency all over the place. But it’s only my second day. I was surprised at how well I’ve done so far.

Mid-highHere’s where I started, pretty high, but not the highest I found I could go.

MidA nice mid-range diddy.

Low 1After some experimenting that probably sounded like a burning, mutant slug, I figured out how to hit the low tones. Awesome!

Low 2I think you can actually start to hear some harmonics in this one.

Super LowI noticed there was a really low note accidentally popping out when I started going lower. I attempted to reproduce it intentionally, with some success. Hopefully, after more training and strengthening, I’ll be able to control it.

Strange but cool, right? I’mma keep working on it for sure. See what I can make of it. Here’s a very interesting song using throat singing in a more contemporary style.

I’m getting better at jumping rope, too. :)
